Worship and Study Minyan

The Worship & Study Minyan aims to be a gateway into Judaism: we welcome the uncertain and unlearned who are discovering themselves as Jews; also the knowledgeable who are rediscovering their Jewish values. We are a place where people come to learn and stay to teach. Some of our members are well-known Jewish educators and professors; some begin without even alef-bet.

We include students and faculty, staff and community, newborns and elders. Together we make a beautiful noise: singing, praying, discussing. Special events—bar/bat mitzvahs, ufrufs before weddings, baby-namings, daylong study-retreats, etc. enhance our sense of community.

We are participatory, egalitarian, intergenerational, self-governing, rabbi-guided. Our Shabbat service is basically Conservative, but we abridge tradition to make room for a half-hour of lively Torah study and discussion in English, led by a different person each week. Discussion often continues after services, over delicious varieties of kiddush.

Bar/Bat Mitzvah Institute

Harvard Hillel is a good place for a young person to become bar- or bat-mitzvah.

Over the past 30 years or so, the Worship & Study congregation at Harvard Hillel has served as an entryway for young people (and their families) on the journey towards becoming a bar- or bat mitzvah.

Norman Janis:  EREV ROSH HASHANAH 5769 (9/29/08)

Are We Our Brothers’ and Sisters’ Keepers?

Rosh Hashanah is the beginning of a new year in the Jewish calendar – the year that we call 5769.  According to Jewish tradition, this will be the 5769th year since the Creation of the World as told to us in the Book of Genesis.  On Rosh Hashanah, we look forward with hope that our lives will be good in the new year just beginning.  And our holiday itself celebrates the anniversary of the created world that we live in, where the stories of our lives unfold.
