At Harvard Hillel, Passover Feels Like Home

Header 8

Dear fellow members of Harvard’s Jewish Community,

Last Passover was the first time I expected to spend the holiday alone—or so I thought. Even though I was far away from my family and my home, I felt a sense of belonging at Harvard Hillel, where the community turned what could have been solitude into celebration.

Harvard Hillel sustained me in a literal sense: I ate every single meal at Hillel, the only kosher-for-Passover dining hall on campus. Hillel also sustained me spiritually: every time I walked into the building I saw the familiar faces of friends and staff members and knew I was home. Last Passover also marked the beginning of the encampment in Harvard Yard, where I lived. The divisions on campus deeply affected me. At a time where my dorm could not feel like home, Harvard Hillel became my home.

This feeling, that Harvard Hillel has my back, is not unique to holidays. Every meal, outing, activity, and learning opportunity at Hillel fulfills my need for a Jewish home when I am far from my own. Whether it’s a Shabbat dinner filled with laughter, a late-night study session with friends, or a heartfelt conversation with a campus rabbi, Harvard Hillel is more than just a space—it’s a home for Jewish joy and meaningful connection.

This incredible sense of community, which helped me navigate my first Passover away from my family, is exactly what inspired me to run for Hillel President. My goal is to ensure that students on campus feel a true sense of belonging, especially during the holidays when the need for connection and tradition is felt most deeply. But I cannot do it alone.

As we approach Passover 5785, I know that although I will not be with my family for the holiday, I will not be alone. I will be celebrating with my friends in a community that feels like family. With your support, Harvard Hillel can continue to be the home Jewish students need, especially now.

Your gift today will make all the difference for students who need this community now more than ever. Will you help Jewish students like me find community and home this Passover?
